Upcoming Video Game Movies in 2020 and Beyond

With the success of Pokemon: Detective Pikachu in 2019 and Sonic The Hedgehog in 2020, movie studios like Universal and Warner Bros are racing to announce their upcoming video game adaptations.  Will these movies become franchise-launching films, mediocre flops, or fizzle away during production?  Only time will tell, but here is a selection of what is on the schedule for 2020 and beyond:

September 4, 2020

What we know:  Monster Hunter (2020) was written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, and will star Milla Jovovich and Ron Perlman.  If anyone is capable of launching an action-oriented, video game-based film franchise, it’s Paul W.S. Anderson, whose previous credits include the entirety of the Resident Evil film franchise and the original Mortal Kombat (1995).

January 15, 2021

What we know:  Speaking of Mortal Kombat, a reboot film of this video game franchise is set to release on January 15, 2021.  Not much is known about the plot, but screenwriter Greg Russo has announced that the film will have an R-rating.  Russo appears to be well-suited to video game adaptations – other film projects he is working on include a Resident Evil reboot and an adaptation of the F.E.A.R. franchise.

March 5, 2021

What we know:  After years of casting & plot speculation, we now know that Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming), will portray adventurer Nathan Drake in the upcoming Uncharted movie.  The film will serve as an origin film for Drake, taking place before the events of the video game series.

March 4, 2022

What we know:  A Minecraft film adaptation has appeared on the release schedule a few times over the past few years, only to quietly disappear.  Writer and director Peter Sollett (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) has developed a new script for the block-based game, which Minecraft fans are eagerly awaiting.

TBD 2022

What we know:  Not many details are available on this animated adaptation of Super Mario Bros, outside of the fact that it is being developed by Illumination (Despicable Me, Minions).  In January 2020, Nintendo confirmed that the project is still in development with a planned release in 2022.
