Science fiction films have undergone a renaissance in the cinemas over the past few years, with box office and critical hits like The Martian, Interstellar, Gravity, Ex Machina, and Oblivion to name just a few. There has rarely been a better time to enjoy science fiction on the big screen than right now. So what will be this year's breakout sci-fi hit? Here's our list of little-known (for now) science fiction films on our radar in 2016:
Wide Release Date: August 19th
Starring Asa Butterfield, Carla Gugino, and Gary Oldman, The Space Between Us tells the story of Gardner Elliot, a 16-year old boy who was born, orphaned, and raised on Mars by a team of scientists sent to colonize the planet. When the chance to return to Earth arises, Gardner embarks on a mission to find his father and his place in the universe.
Wide Release Date: ???
Adapted from the Nebula Award-winning and Hugo Award-nominated short story by Ted Chiang, Story of Your Life takes place after alien crafts land around the world, and an expert linguist is recruited by the military to determine whether they come in peace or are a threat. Directed by Denis Villeneuve (Sicario), whose list of future projects include the upcoming Blade Runner sequel.
Wide Release Date: December 21st
A spacecraft traveling to a distant colony planet and transporting thousands of people has a malfunction in its sleep chambers. As a result, two passengers (played by Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt) are awakened 60 years early.
Limited Release Date: March 18, Wide Release Date: ???
OK, it's probably cheating to put a film that has already been released on a list of anticipated films, but as of yet there is no official wide theatrical release date for this sci-fi adventure film. Midnight Special tells the tale of a father and son who go on the run after the dad learns his child possesses special powers. Starring Michael Shannon, Adam Driver, and Kirsten Dunst.
Wide Release Date: ???
The Titan, starring Sam Worthington and Taylor Schilling, is still listed as filming but currently holds a release date of sometime in 2016. Set in a not-too-distant future, this speculative fiction story tracks the journey of a military family that is relocated to take part in a groundbreaking experiment of man’s genetic evolution into space.
